Monera — the bacterial cell

01 · Structure

Inside a bacterium

A prokaryotic cell has a cell wall, a membrane, cytoplasm with ribosomes, a nucleoid of circular DNA, small plasmids, sometimes a capsule, and flagella/pili. ▶ Play to highlight each part.

02 · Binary fission

Splitting in two

Bacteria reproduce asexually by binary fission: the circular DNA is copied, the cell elongates, and it pinches into two identical daughter cells — sometimes every 20 minutes. ▶ Play.
